The latest innovation in irrigation is the smart sprinkler controller, a device that gives your plants the right amount of water for the time of year, climate and weather.

Residents saved more than 40 gallons per household per day after installation, according to one research study. Savings are up to 10 times greater on large landscapes, like those at parks, colleges and industrial complexes. (Note: to realize significant savings you will need to have a well-designed and well-maintained irrigation system.

To assure quality, rebates are offered only for smart controllers that have been tested by the Center for Irrigation Technology at California State University, Fresno.

You can find an updated listing of eligible smart, weather-based irrigation controllers by logging on to the Irrigation Association web site. All the controllers with testing results posted are eligible for rebates from Metropolitan and its member agencies.
